NIH Grants: Fund HIV Prevention Research
Summary
Research institutions and established scientists can apply for funding to deepen our understanding of HIV transmission and develop innovative prevention strategies. This grant supports groundbreaking research aiming to discover new ways to block HIV/SIV infection at mucosal sites.
Eligibility
Full Description
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications to enhance the understanding of early events in mucosal transmission of HIV/SIV leading to the discovery of novel mechanism(s) of virus transmission, host cell-virus interaction and to advance new concepts for HIV prevention strategies/approaches. The emphasis of this FOA is discovery research focused on acquiring novel insights that may lead to the development of new conventional or outside-the-box approaches to vaccines and non-vaccine biomedical prevention strategies for optimizing mucosal protection against HIV/SIV. Investigators new to the HIV field and established HIV investigators are encouraged to apply.
Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project (R01) award mechanism. A FOA of similar overall scientific scope but with a different approach, RFA-AI-10-004,encourages applications using the Program Project Grant (P01) mechanism. Applicants are urged to apply to one or the other FOA, but not both.
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIAID intends to commit approximately $6.0M in FY2010 to fund 8-12 applications submitted in response to this FOA. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
