Full Description

With 17% of the general population infected with HIV, Botswana has one of the highest prevalence rates in the world. Historically, the country has also had a high incidence of TB. The Government of Botswana has developed some of the strongest treatment and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) programs in sub-Saharan Africa. As PEPFAR Botswana transitions to a technical assistance (TA) model, there is an increasing focus on the training and mentoring of health care workers to build local capacity. This FOA has five program areas related to capacity building:Program Area A: Care, support and treatment, including PMTCT, for adult and pediatric populationsProgram Area B: TB/HIVProgram Area C: LaboratoryProgram Area D: InformaticsProgram Area E: Cervical cancerAll activities will be done in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Training and mentoring needs are ongoing due to high staff turnover and changing international recommendations. Implementing partners should build the capacity of the MOH to provide these services without outside assistance by the end of year 5 of the cooperative agreement.
